London: Notting Hill Carnival

We'd never quite successfully managed to see the carnival before, arriving after the action and seeing only glitter on the ground, bewildered looking drunk people and rubbish. But this year Frankie-Rose and I went with our friend Ella who knows what to do and where to go, and so we found ourselves by the judging booth, which the floats reserve their best displays for. It was kids day, but my it was still so loud.  Lorries with 15 amps piled on the back trundled by slowly, volume turned to the max, bass vibrating the pavement on which we stood, with hoards of people dancing wildly behind. I think I expected more elaborate costumes and more colourful decoration of the floats, but I am still very glad I've seen it. Frankie was snuggled against me in the sling and slept through the whole afternoon (unheard of- maybe she liked the bass?!) whilst Ella and I bopped along at the side and watched people  and took photo's, and giggled at the drunk people.

If you've been before, what did you think? Is the adults day better for costumes and bling?

  1. I've been a couple of times, and found the adults day overwhelming - floats take hours to come past, the colours are incredible but the music is heavier, and there's a lot more drunk people (which really put me off). I think a lot of it is probably finding a decent viewing spot though!

  2. yes I've heard similar things in the past about adults day. I'm not in a rush to try it, esecially after experiencing 'kids day'!- which was not very kid-ish if you ask me!

  3. What a riot of colour (and I adore the flamingo bus!)! I've never been but would love to see it some day... there used to be a similar-ish one in Glasgow that was just so much fun :)
